Kamila Knows Best by Farah Heron is a retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma with South Asian-Canadian characters. The cover design was a collaborative effort between Daniela Medina (Art Director at HBG), Lauren Hom (Lettering Artist), and Zeina Shareef (Illustrator). The overall art direction was based on Kamila’s – the protagonist in the book – love for Bollywood. The inspiration for the illustration was based on dramatic rain scenes in Bollywood movies. The rain pattern was inspired by the tear-drop shapes often used in Mehendi patterns. The colour palette, as well as the design for Kamila’s dress, was inspired by Indian Saris.
